The Marketing Guru

Our Consultants - Nick Hill

Nick started his career with IPC Magazines in 1993 as a Marketing & Promotions Assistant on Specialist Mens Magazines and rose rapidly through the ranks on the company's graduate training scheme, becoming a Marketing Manager. He successfully launched several new titles and had fun learning more about cycling, aeroplanes and trains than he ever thought possible!

In 1996, right at the start of the Internet revolution, he left the publishing industry and moved into the online world, joining Virgin Net, the Virgin-branded ISP and content portal. He spent 3 years there as an Online Marketing Manager and ISP Channel Manager, setting up some truly original online marketing campaigns, including viral campaigns for free cinema tickets, tie-ups with the movie industry (Austin Powers, The Beach etc), in the process helping Virgin Net become one of the biggest and one of the few profitable ISPs before joining Genie (the mobile internet arm of BT) in 2000.

At Genie, Nick initially launched and managed the Mobile ISP, building this from scratch into a sizeable, profitable ISP base. He then moved into SMS, and created, managed and marketed hundreds of premium SMS services. He turned a loss-making exercise into a new revenue stream generating in excess of £1m+ per year, with a customer base of hundreds of thousands.

He then switched his focus to the O2 consumer website, researching and developing and managing a range of sticky fixed and mobile converged products and services to attract users to the site and convert into customers. In doing this, Nick helped the O2 website become one of the biggest e-commerce sites in Europe, with more than double the market share of rival mobile operators, and e-commerce revenues of many millions of pounds. More than 4 million customers still visit the site each month.
